Xiaolan Fu appointed to Governing Council of proposed new UN Technology Bank

We are delighted to announce that UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has appointed Professor Xiaolan Fu to the governing council of a proposed new UN Technology Bank.

The Technology Bank is envisaged as a facilitating mechanism to address gaps in science, technology and innovation in least developed countries (LDCs). It aims to help LDCs build a robust STI base, support their technology access, acquisition and utilisation, and promote research networking of their STI community.

Establishment of the Technology Bank, initially proposed in the 2011 Istanbul Programme of Action, is one of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 17. The Technology Bank is due to begin operating in 2017 and the Government of Turkey has offered to host it in Gebze, Turkey.

The Governing Council will formulate principles and policies governing the activities and operations of the mechanism, including preparing its Charter for consideration and adoption by the UN General Assembly.
