Shashwat Koirala

Research Student

Shashwat is a DPhil student at the Oxford Department of International Development (ODID). He is broadly interested in how global economic structures shape development trajectories, particularly amid growing efforts to bring economic activity within planetary boundaries. His doctoral research focuses on the relationship between international trade and biodiversity policies, examining how efforts to protect biodiversity reshape trade patterns and what this means for lower-income countries.

Prior to joining ODID, Shashwat worked at the OECD for over seven years. Most recently, he was an economist in the OECD's Development Co-operation Directorate, where his work encompassed development finance, environmental action (particularly concerning the ocean), poverty and inequality, and development impact. He previously held positions in the OECD's Office of the Chief Economist, as well as its Environment and Public Governance Directorates. Before joining the OECD, Shashwat worked as an economic analyst in the Competition and Antitrust Practice at Charles River Associates.

Shashwat is Nepali-Canadian and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Chicago and a Master's in International Economic Policy from Sciences Po Paris.
