Pieter Serneels
Pieter is Professor of Economics at the University of East Anglia. His research primarily focuses on human capital and development, using insights and methods from behavioural and experimental economics. Pieter’s work has been published in leading journals in economics and the wider social sciences, as well as in prominent book series and books.
Pieter is a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP), European Development Research Network (EUDN), and Research on Improving Systems of education (RISE).
He is Team leader of Behavioural and Experimental Development Economics Research Group (BEDERG), and served as an executive member of the Center for Behavioral and Experimental Social Sciences (CBESS), both at the University of East Anglia.
Pieter was part time seconded to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) during 2018-23, where he was the Economics Senior Research Fellow advising the Growth Research Team and the Chief Economist.
PLANNED RESEARCH AT ODID
Pieter’s on-going research focuses on enhancing primary education outcomes, scaling up earlier work, and improving health, building upon previous work on its role for productivity. He is initiating new research on climate change and work, as well as on the nature and dynamics of policy decision making.
