The Technology and Management for Development Centre (TMD) at ODID has signed an agreement to pursue joint research and teaching with the Centre for Innovation and Development (CID) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in a ceremony in Beijing attended by Vice Chancellor Andrew Hamilton.

The Memorandum of Understanding with CID, which is part of the Academy's Institute of Policy and Management, envisages joint research in the areas of science, technology and innovation policy (STIP) and management, as well as interdisciplinary studies on the impact of STI on economic and social development.

The MoU was signed in Beijing by TMD Director Dr Xiaolan Fu and Professor Rongping Mu, Director of CID and the Institute of Policy and Management. The event was attended by Vice Chancellor Hamilton and Professor Fang Xin, Vice Secretary and member of the Presidium of CAS.

The TMD centre and CASCID have already collaborated on several joint research activities, including joint research examining the motivation for, mode and impact of the integration of emerging economies into the global innovation system.

According to Dr Xiaolan Fu, the signing of the MoU marks a milestone for academic collaboration between two prestigious world institutions. “The UK has been a global economic and technology leader and China has been aspiring to regain its status as a global leader,” Dr Fu said. “China’s rapid economic development, coupled with global changes, has brought unprecedented opportunities for Chinese and UK Institutions to collaborate and prosper together”.

The two centres also plan to organize joint research workshops, symposia, conferences and summer schools as well as promoting a regular researcher exchange scheme and exchange of PhD students for short-term visiting study or fieldwork research.
