ODID Tops Ranking for International Development in REF 2014

We are delighted to announce that ODID has been judged to be the leading international development department in the country in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

ODID ranked top in its field in terms of both the quality of its research activity and the volume of its world-leading work. It was one of 12 Oxford units to be ranked first by the latter measure.

ODID also made the biggest submission to the REF in international development, with 47 members of staff entered. We were particularly pleased to have submitted a large number of young researchers, with 20 early career researchers entered, contributing to individual career development as well as to nurturing a new generation of stellar researchers and thus building research capacity.

ODID improved on its performance in the last assessment, the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), when we also came top. Nearly 80 per cent of our research activity was judged to be either world leading or internationally excellent in the REF 2014, compared to 65 percent in RAE 2008.

The REF is the official UK-wide assessment of all university research.
