ODID Alumna Heidi Williams Wins 2015 MacArthur 'Genius Grant'

We are delighted to announce that ODID alumna Heidi Williams has been awarded a 2015 MacArthur Fellowship.

The fellowships, worth $625,000 over five years, are awarded to individuals who have shown exceptional creativity in their work as well as future potential. Often referred to as “Genius Grants”, the awards are unrestricted and may be used by recipients in any way they choose.

Heidi, who studied the MSc in Economics for Development at ODID in 2003-04, is now the Class of 1957 Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research investigates the causes and consequences of technological change in healthcare markets, with a particular focus on trying to understand how patents affect innovation.

According to the MacArthur Foundation announcement, "Williams’s insights about market inducements for innovation and the implications of technological change in health care markets are informing institutional practice and public policy and sparking new lines of inquiry about innovation more broadly.
