Nikita Sud Quoted in Sydney Morning Herald Article on Modi's Approach to Opening Indian Economy

ODID Associate Professor Nikita Sud is quoted in an article in the Sydney Morning Herald that explores the difficutlies new Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi might face in any attempts to open up India’s economy.

She suggested that Modi must balance the need to secure the help of the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) in winning state elections later this year with pressures from pro-business supporters to spur investment and revive growth.

"If it were not for the RSS, Modi may not have been nominated as the prime ministerial candidate," said Sud. "If the BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] does very well in those elections, he's likely to feel that he's in a stronger position, and then he might want to push through some reforms even if he faces some opposition from the RSS. It's very much going to be a dance between politics and economics."
