Xiaolan Fu has edited a new Special Issue of the Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies. The special issue, in JCEBS 9 (4), November 2011, is entitled China's Drive Towards an Innovative Nation.

Dr Fu has also co-edited a Special Section of World Development with Luc Soete (UNU-MERIT) and Carlo Pietrobelli (IADB).

The special section, in World Development 39 (7), July 2011, is entitled Foreign Technology and Indigenous Innovation in Emerging Economies.

It stresses that the benefits of FDI and international technology on development in host economies can only be delivered with parallel indigenous innovation efforts and the presence of modern institutional and governance structures and conductive innovation systems.

By using a diversity of empirical evidence, the six papers included in the section indicate that policies need to be carefully designed and sequenced to achieve a better integration between FDI and local development, which echoes the recent recommendation made by UNCTAD regarding FDI policy
