The department is a lively community that is recognised internationally as one of the top centres for research and teaching in development studies.

Our courses offer excellent training for a career in international development or for advanced study, and attract students of the highest calibre from across the world.
“I had waited for 10 years before my dream to study in Oxford became a reality and the experience was truly beyond expectation”
Our students are taught to develop as critical and independent thinkers and when they leave us they are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to bring about real change.
“My time at Oxford strengthened my critical analysis and provided me with a unique interdisciplinary grounding in history, politics and economics that has equipped me well in dealing with public policy issues and program development strategy.”

Congratulations to former ODID DPhil Dr Marco J Haenssgen, who has been appointed Assistant Professor in Global Sustainable Development at the University of Warwick
Marco will take up his post, a permanent position shared between the School of Cross-Faculty Studies and the Department of Politics and International Studies, in January 2019.
Marco completed his DPhil in December 2015. His research at ODID explored the consequences of mobile phone diffusion on rural healthcare access in India and China. This DPhil research formed the basis for subsequent health-related social research projects in Southeast Asia with Oxford’s Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health, including qualitative and quantitative health behaviour research in Myanmar, Thailand, and Lao PDR.
The interdisciplinary environment at Warwick promises new collaborations and will enable Marco to intensify his development studies research on human behaviour and social innovation in tropical medicine.
