Our Approach

Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion is central to our work as a department examining poverty, inequality, development and social change.

We recognise that ODID's history and the wider field of international development require ongoing reflection

on issues of power, representation and global inequality. We are committed to ensuring that these considerations inform our teaching, research and partnerships.

How We Deliver This Work

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee oversees the department's EDI work, action planning and progress. The Committee brings together representatives from academic, research and professional services staff, alongside student representatives, ensuring that a broad range of perspectives informs our work.

Working with colleagues across the department, the Committee helps to identify priorities, monitor progress and promote an inclusive culture for staff and students.

Our Priorities

Global Partnerships

•  Build equitable and mutually beneficial partnerships, particularly with colleagues and institutions in the Global South.

•  Promote collaborative approaches to research and knowledge exchange.

•  Identify and challenge extractive or inequitable research practices.

Teaching and Learning

•  Broaden the range of voices and perspectives represented in our curriculum.

•  Foster inclusive and respectful learning environments where all students can participate and succeed.

•  Encourage critical engagement with global inequalities and the production of knowledge.

Staff and Students

•  Improve diversity across our staff and student communities.

•  Support an inclusive culture where everyone feels welcome, respected and able to thrive.

•  Review policies and practices to reduce barriers to participation and achievement, particularly for underrepresented groups.

Putting our Approach into Practice

Our EDI priorities are reflected across all aspects of departmental life, including:

•  Research: promoting ethical and equitable research practices, supporting collaborative partnerships, and encouraging inclusive research cultures.

•  Teaching: developing inclusive curricula, classroom practices and learning environments.

•  Staff: supporting fair recruitment, development and progression, and fostering an inclusive workplace.

•  Students: reviewing admissions processes, providing targeted support where appropriate, and creating opportunities for all students to succeed.
