Anvita Ramachandran

Research Student

Anvita Ramachandran is a doctoral candidate in International Development. Her research interests lie broadly in development and labour economics, and includes topics like human capital, migration, and firms. She previously obtained an MPhil in Development Studies (with distinction) at the University of Oxford, and a BA in Economics and a BSc in Statistics (magna cum laude) from the University of Chicago.

In her master’s thesis, Anvita investigated the impacts of migration on both the monetary and subjective well-being of households in India, to unpack why migration rates remain low despite the substantial spatial disparities in opportunities and living standards. For her research on the MPhil, she received the Papiya Ghosh Prize for the best MPhil thesis. In her DPhil, she plans to further explore topics related to labour, education and migration in India, from both the individual and firm perspective.

Alongside her studies, Anvita has also worked as a research assistant with the Young Lives study in Oxford and the Centre for the Economics of Human Development in Chicago, studying the link between childhood skill development and various forms of inequality.

Her research is generously supported by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Saven European Scholarship, and the Scatcherd European Scholarship.
