Alumnus Cinar Baymul launches AI-powered knowledge resource for doctors

A new venture developed by former ODID doctoral student Cinar Baymul uses the power of artificial intelligence to provide an up-to-date information resource for doctors and medical students in the UK.

Ask Me, Doctor uses a specially constructed model based on ChatGPT to bring together the latest medical research, treatment protocols, and guidelines.

Cinar explained the motivation for the project: “My partner is a junior doctor in the NHS and throughout her career across various trusts, she has observed a noticeable absence of technological tools designed to assist doctors in patient care with up-to-date information. This absence hampers doctors' ability to create effective treatment plans quickly, exacerbating the already tremendous pressure faced by healthcare professionals in our healthcare system”.

Recent advances in AI have made it possible to develop highly advanced and specialised models that can provide comprehensive information to doctors within seconds. However, building an AI model presented some obstacles, with the foremost being the demand for the high degree of accuracy essential for doctors.

“ChatGPT, an extensive language model, occasionally produces inaccurate or entirely fabricated answers. This is particularly prevalent in highly specialised domains such as medicine. To overcome this, we constructed our own medical knowledge base, constantly updated with official UK health guidelines” Cinar said.  “By using this as the model's primary source, we have achieved remarkable accuracy in generating responses.”

The resource is also intended to be of use to junior doctors, who have to take up to five different specialist examinations as part of their ongoing study. Preparing for such exams often entails paying for expensive study materials and question banks.

“Our vision for Ask Me, Doctor is to establish it as a comprehensive information hub for doctors and medical students in the UK. Our platform aims to not only save time and alleviate the burdens of their daily responsibilities but also serve as a valuable resource for accessing educational materials prepared by AI,” Cinar said.

Cinar completed the DPhil in International Development at ODID in 2017.
