This analysis introduces a framework for measuring Integral Human Development (IHD) through the Multidimensional Well-being Indicator (MWI), specifically applied to the context of Malawi. Grounded in the Capability Approach. Utilizing the Alkire-Foster counting method, the MWI evaluates well-being across 11 domains and 27 indicators, integrating traditional dimensions such as education and health with innovative domains like community vitality, environmental human security, and subjective household well-being.
Drawing on the Fifth Integrated Household Survey, the results highlight significant disparities: while high sufficiency is observed in Education and Conflict and Violence Human Security, severe insufficiencies persist in Living Standards and Environmental Human Security.
This multidimensional approach serves as a critical diagnostic tool for policy makers, enabling them to disentangle territorial differences and demographic vulnerabilities. Ultimately, the MWI provides a rigorous, coherent metric to foster new narratives for sustainable and inclusive development in Malawi.
