New Zealand's most accomplished artist Charles Goldie depicted the arrival of the Māori as a heroic shipwreck. Even though Māori generally like his minutely observed ethnographic portraits, they hate his picture of the arrival. How does this illustrate the debates about culture contact and why does it still matter?
