Meeting Minds in Oxford

ODID will be taking part in the University's Meeting Minds alumni weekend this September.

No go world: How fear is redrawing our maps and infecting our politics

Drawing on his new book, No Go World, Associate Professor Ruben Andersson will talk about the politics of international security interventions in global crisis zones. Focusing on the West African Sahel, he will show how bunkering, bordering and remote-controlled operations are increasing distance between interveners and local society, with dangerous consequences for us all.

When: Saturday, 21 September 2019, 14:30-15:30

Where: ODID, Queen Elizabeth House, 3 Mansfield Road, Oxford OX1 3TB

Shelter without shelter: exploring architecture for refugees

Associate Professor Tom Scott Smith will be showing part of a new documentary he made with filmmaker Mark Breeze, Shelter without Shelter. The film examines how six different countries have sheltered refugees from Syria since the ’summer of migration’ in 2015 – Jordan, Lebanon, Greece, Germany, France and Austria – exploring the differing impact on the lives of refugees and the future role for architects and designers.

When: Saturday, 21 September 2019, 16:00-18:00

Where: ODID, Queen Elizabeth House, 3 Mansfield Road, Oxford OX1 3TB

(Why not combine this with a visit to the fantastic 'Lande: the Calais "Jungle" and Beyond' exhibition which is showing at the Pitt Rivers museum until 29 November? Note the exhibition is not part of the alumni weekend.)

ODID alumni can attend these two events for free – if you have not been notified about the discount code, please email alumni@qeh.ox.ac.uk.
