The department is a lively community that is recognised internationally as one of the top centres for research and teaching in development studies.
Welcome from the Head of Department
I am delighted to welcome you to the department and look forward to supporting you as you settle into your new role. I am convinced that our people are what make the department great and I am enthusiastically committed to helping you in this, my last year as Head.
By joining ODID, you have become part of a dynamic and diverse department. We pride ourselves on carrying out research of the very highest quality that is making a real difference to peoples’ lives, and on the excellent teaching and strong support we offer to our graduate student community. From the dedicated loft we provide for our doctoral students to our collaborations with partners across the world, all our actions aim to encourage the best environment for world-class, meaningful teaching, supervision and research.
We are committed to providing a warm and welcoming environment for our staff, with plenty of opportunity for social interaction through our friendly coffee mornings during term, and our lively summer and Christmas parties. We strive always to be open and transparent, holding regular online staff meetings at which we will keep you updated on the latest news and key developments and where you can share your thoughts and offer feedback. We are also open to new ideas for promoting interaction, so do not hesitate to let us know if you have any.
Our staff come to us from a very wide range of backgrounds and countries and we work hard to promote equality, diversity and inclusion, nurturing every member of our team. We actively support the development of staff at every level, including through regular personal development reviews with line managers.
I want you to know that my door will always be open to you – to discuss any problems you may have, to hear your suggestions, or if you simply want to say hello.
With best wishes,
Professor Diego Sánchez-Ancochea
