Consumption and social enterprise in a context of poverty, Morro da Cruz, Brazil

Dr Lucia Scalco

In 2009, Rosana joined an ongoing research project at Morro da Cruz, the biggest favela in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, conducted since 2005 by prominent local activist and researcher Dr Lucia Scalco. In collaboration, they have been writing about families’ living expenses and life projects. The research pays particular attention to the role of consumption in the process of identity and dignity building among families that receive Bolsa Familia (a well-known Brazilian poverty-reduction programme). We problematise how modernity is adapted in a local context of poverty.
