Fees
Full information on fees can be found in the Graduate Studies Prospectus. All students should make adequate provision to cover their fees and expenses for the entire period of the expected study. MPhil and research students must remember to include adequate provision for the expenses of fieldwork where their thesis topic requires it. Opportunities to raise sufficient funding through teaching or research assistantships are not available within the Department.
Funding and Studentships
Departmental Awards
ODID offers a number of full scholarships (covering University and College fees, plus an amount towards maintenance) known as 'Queen Elizabeth House Scholarships', available to students on any of the courses it offers.
The criteria for selection will be outstanding academic ability and citizenship of (and normal residence in) a developing country as defined by the United Nations, with a preference for candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa. Continuation of scholarships in the case of multi-year courses (MPhil and DPhil) will be conditional upon a high standard of academic performance.
There is no separate application process. Candidates should choose 'Departmental award in the drop-down menu in the on-line application or write 'QEH scholarship' on the paper application forms if they wish to be considered for a QEH Scholarship.
ESRC Studentships 2012: Development Studies and Migration Pathways
The University of Oxford is one of 21 centres of postgraduate excellence accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as a Doctoral Training Centre. ODID has five studentships to offer for entry in 2012-13: two in the Development Studies training pathway and, with the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography (SAME), three in the Migration training pathway.
We are pleased to invite applications for Masters-to-DPhil or DPhil programmes for these studentships starting in October 2012. The studentships are available for all of the ODID Masters courses and the DPhil in International Development. (Please note that the studentships are not intended for taught Masters degrees on their own – all applications should envisage the applicant continuing with a doctorate.)

Corpus Christi College Graduate Studentship in Development
The students of Corpus Christi College raise funds to make a generous donation towards the provision of a scholarship for one student who has been offered a place on one of the Masters courses offered by ODID. Between the College and the Department, the scholarship covers fees plus an amount towards living expenses.
The criteria for selection will be outstanding academic ability and citizenship of (and normal residence in) a developing country as defined by the United Nations, with a preference for candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa. There is no application for this scholarship: the recipient will be informed by the Department. The recipient will be a member of Corpus Christi College.
Green Templeton College/QEH Scholarship
Green Templeton College and ODID provide the funding for a scholarship which covers fees plus an amount towards living expenses.
The criteria for selection will be outstanding academic ability and citizenship of (and normal residence in) a developing country as defined by the United Nations, with a preference for candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa. There is no application for this scholarship: the recipient will be informed by the Department. The recipient will be a member of Green Templeton College.
Economics Department
The Economics Department provides a scholarship worth £20,000 to be allocated to any successful candidate offered a place for the MSc in Economics for Development. The scholarship is open to any candidate for the course, irrespective of nationality or background; all applications will be considered on merit only. In the event of multiple strong candidates applying, some with partial funding from other sources, the Department would be willing to share the award between two candidates, to the value of £10,000 each. Candidates should notify their interest in applying for this scholarship (known as the 'Economics Department Scholarship') on their application form. There is no separate application form. Successful candidates will be notified by the second half of May.
Eni Scholarships
St Antony’s College, in partnership with the international integrated energy company Eni, is offering three students from African universities the opportunity of fully funded scholarships, including fees and living expenses, to undertake postgraduate study at the Master's level at Oxford commencing in October 2012
The programme aims to appoint one scholar each from Angola, Ghana and Nigeria. The scholarships are available for a number of courses, including the following at ODID:
- MPhil in Development Studies
- MSc in Economics for Development
- MSc in Global Governance and Diplomacy

St Cross College MPhil Scholarship in the Humanities and Social Sciences
Applicants for the MPhil in Development Studies are eligible to apply for the St Cross College MPhil Scholarship in the Humanities and Social Scinces.
The Scholarship is open to students who will begin studying at the University of Oxford in the academic year 2012-13.
Applicants must list St Cross College as their first choice college on their Graduate Admissions application in order to be eligible to apply for this Scholarship.
The Scholarship has the value of the annual College fee, currently £2,426 per annum for 2011-12, and is tenable for two years coterminous with college fee liability. The successful scholar will be guaranteed a room in College accommodation (at the standard rent) for the first year of their course. Applications should be received by the application deadline of Friday 9th March 2012.
The Scholarship is tenable at St Cross College only. Application forms and further details can be found here.
Other Funding Opportunities for Overseas Students
A range of scholarships is available for overseas students, for example through the British Council, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Fulbright Trust, the Rhodes Trust, the Felix Scholarship Funds, Weidenfeld, Clarendon, and University Bursaries and College Awards. Separate application may be required and students are advised to consult the information in the Graduate Studies Prospectus for further information or contact the Student Funding Office for help. Those applying for Weidenfeld and the FCO/OSI scholarships should note that they MUST include all supporting materials required for their intended course. English language certificates must be submitted by any applicant whose first language is not English (who has not successfully completed a degree course in the UK), and for the MSc in Economics for Development, the GRE certificate must be submitted by any applicant whose bachelors degree is not from a British university.
