OPHI Director Sabina Alkire speaks at UN General Assembly

Sabina Alkire, director of the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) spoke at a meeting of the UN General Assembly on 18 April, taking part in a session on poverty eradication.

Almost every country was represented at the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals session, where the keynote address was given by Professor Abhijit Banerjee, International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Olaf Kjørven, Assistant Secretary-General of UNDP, introduced an issues note prepared by the UN System Technical Support Team.

Alkire spoke about OPHI's global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), an international measure of acute poverty covering 104 developing countries that was developed by OPHI and the UNDP in 2010, and has been published in the UNDP's flagship Human Development Reports ever since.
