New Special Issue on the Role of Religion in the Making of a Region

Dr Nikita Sud, University Lecturer in Development Studies, has edited a special issue of the journal South Asia, along with Professor Harald Tambs-Lyche of the Universite de Picardie Jules Verne.

The special issue, in South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies 34 (3), December 2011, is entitled Religion in the Making of a Region: Perspectives from Gujarat.

The special issue is the result of a workshop held at Oxford in July 2010, which brought together historians, anthropologists, sociologists and political scientists in a quest to unpack the multi-dimensional and long-term role of religion in the production, reproduction and, at times, endangering of a frontier western Indian region. The contributors engage with ongoing narratives and debates on religion globally, showing religion as a source, simultaneously, of conflict, and also of well-being, identity politics, economic decision-making, quotidian faith, and much more.
