MSc Student Gets Pulitzer Grant to Interview Artists and Musicians in Post-revolutionary Egypt
Ty McCormick, MSc candidate in Global Governance and Diplomacy, has been awarded a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting in Washington, DC, for a project titled 'Art and Politics in Post-revolutionary Egypt.'
One year since the uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak, Egypt is experiencing 'something of a cultural renaissance', according to Ty. Artists, poets, authors and playwrights 'are finally beginning to flex their creative muscle after decades of forced self-censorship. But if the revolution has emboldened Egypt's creative class, it has also unleashed a rising Islamist tide that is no friend of the Egyptian avant-garde.'
In November and December 2011, Ty sat down with numerous artists and musicians to tell their stories. The project, which was published in Newsweek International, The New Republic, and The San Francisco Chronicle, among others, featured interviews with politicians, youth leaders, and the head of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party.
Ty also appeared on Fox News to comment on the first parliamentary election since last year's uprising.
