Indrajit Roy Writes for Hindustan Times on Secularism and the Indian Election

ODID Junior Research Fellow Indrajit Roy has written an article for the Hindustan Times in which he examines claims by India's Congress party to represent the best hope for secularism in the country.

He says the Congress party, in a bid to counter the popularity of Narendra Modi of the BJP, is appealing to the electorate in the name of safeguarding secularism. But, he says, such an appeal whitewashes the party’s own complicity in laying the foundations of Hindu nationalist politics.

He suggest that secularism needs better champions and mentions the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati, and Nitish Kumar, current Chief Minister of Bihar.
