International Migration Institute

IMI - researching international migration in the 21st century. The IMI is committed to developing a long-term, comprehensive perspective on global migration dynamics.

International migration is one of the key factors shaping the world in which we live. In the 21st century, changing patterns of international migration raise new intellectual and practical challenges for humanity. Policies aimed at controlling the migration of people are based on a very limited understanding of migrants' motives and the underlying mechanisms of migration. Significant gaps in research and policy explain why migration policies often fail to meet their stated objectives.

The research aims of the IMI are to achieve a deeper understanding of past and current migration dynamics and how they are both part of and affect broader processes of socio-economic change. This will serve to develop scenarios of future migration trends and their interaction with policies.

The IMI has launched the African Migrations Programme to focus on migration processes relating to the African continent
