South Asian Visiting Scholars Programme
The South Asian Visiting Scholars Programme (SAVSP) at ODID invites scholars of exceptional calibre with outstanding academic and publications track record to visit ODID to pursue research on an approved social science project on South Asia. Those working on South Asian anthropology, development studies, economics, environment, gender studies, contemporary history, international relations, politics or sociology are particularly encouraged to apply. The scholars work on their own research projects, but are expected to attend and participate in the wide variety of lectures and seminars available in the University. Additionally, special seminars and workshops may be organised to enable the visiting scholars to present their own research in progress.
The Programme is unable to offer funding to scholars seeking affiliation. Applications for affiliation, without stipend, are welcomed from those who have independent sources of funding. An affiliation fee of £300 per eight-week term is payable by the non-stipendiary scholar to ODID. The fee covers all academic charges. Visitors are allowed access to libraries, University lectures, seminars and other academic facilities in Oxford. We encourage applicants to seek funding from grant-making agencies and institutions, such as the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, British Council, Ford Foundation, DfID, Charles Wallace India and Pakistan Trust, etc.
The Programme is directed by Dr Nandini Gooptu, to whom those wishing to be considered for affiliation to the Programme should apply. Please enclose a full dossier consisting of (i) a curriculum vitae, (ii) a detailed statement of current research (approximately 3000 words), including proposed plan of work at Oxford, and (iii) copies of two pieces of recently published or unpublished written work. Please also arrange for three referees to send confidential references directly to Dr Gooptu. Applications may be submitted at any time of the year.
Applicants are requested to state their telephone and fax numbers and e-mail addresses, whenever possible, and to indicate the most efficient and quickest means of contact. It would not be possible to acknowledge receipt of applications and only successful applicants will be contacted.
In the selection of the scholar, apart from consideration of the academic excellence of the candidate, it will be necessary to establish that appropriate research resources are available in Oxford for the proposed research. The academic year at Oxford runs from October to June, during which period scholars may be affiliated to the Programme. Affiliation is not permitted during the summer vacation (July-September).
